FOLLOW THE UNTRODDEN PATH

Starting out

Not only is ashore different, but so is how you get there and what you do when you arrive.

Your entry formalities are taken care of by the crew with customs and immigration typically coming onboard. On the rare occasions when they may want to talk to you this will take place in the comfort of the ship’s lounge / reception area, with the ships crew beside you.

Because Raffles owners are so few there is no mass entry / exodus and they will quietly blend into the local population (if indeed there is any). It is likely that in many ports of call no foreign tourist will have ever been seen and almost certainly that tourist pricing will be unknown.

In most ports or on visits to islands, beaches and rivers the first thing that will happen is that the marina will be opened, releasing its boats, vehicles, ferries and water toys for use off ship or ashore.

Next, especially with an early morning arrival in a small port, is the Head Chef and supermarket manager visiting the local produce markets. Keep in mind that one of life’s joys is eating and your own purchases in the markets can result in a memorable dinner from your own kitchen.

Then Raffles’ residents might decide to wander ashore and enjoy a first relaxed breakfast in a local side walk cafe before a day doing ……… whatever?
